In 2019 I signed up for my very first spartan race. It was supposed to be in Mary of 2020 at Nationals stadium in DC. No shock, that event didn't happen as with every other event in 2020. I think though that it was a blessing in disguise.
In 2021 when races started to reopen I switched my registration to the Spartan City in Ocean City, MD.
Now, this was not my first obstacle course race. I did that back in 2019 and it was a Savage race and I hated all of it. I was hesitant to even do the Spartan but my friend Matt promised me that it was FAR less muddy. I hate to say it but I'm glad I didn't decide to pass up this race! It was 3 miles of fun and strength!
I scaled (most of) the walls! I tackled the burpees, the medicine balls, the sandbags, the spears, and the ropes! I missed a few obstacles due to lack of ability to climb a rope and inability to reach the bars (#verticallychallenged) but I didn't quit!
I was really impressed with how much of a "team" effort Spartan seems to be. I got to the first tall wall and Matt said he was going over then he would come back and help me. Instead, a guy who was there said, I got you! He bent down, told me what I needed to do, and then he helped me over the wall! After 1.5 years without racing, I can't say enough how much I enjoyed all the camaraderie of this race.
I went home with a medal, a t-shirt, a large arm bruise, and ripped-up hands. I will say the OCMD spartan was well managed. I love the smaller group starts. I understand this is a new thing but I hope they keep it. The only downside I found was that the boardwalk got crazy crowded. I wish they would have had some better signage of what was going on. We did get kinda lost once, we missed a turn off the boardwalk because there were people blocking things. Truly, it is a minor complaint because we chose a late start time on purpose and the other racers were awesome!
Will I do another one? I dunno, maybe. Will I do a longer one? Hell no. This was more than enough of a challenge for me! Would I recommend this to other newbies or those looking to have a good time at a short race? ABSOLUTELY!
